Been a calm weekend, my arm has been kind of sore from Rilles abuse on friday so I took it really easy. Watched the Randy Couture VS Brandon Vera fight on UFC 105 on saturday. Looked like a great matchup Randy is usually a machine despite his 46 (!!!) years, he is a true MMA legend! However it was kind of a let down, mostly clinching and some dirty boxing by Couture and basicly takedown defence and trying to get distance from Vera. I know it`s both fighters tactics usually but it`s just not alot of fun to watch! Very even fight though and Couture barely won it! (sorry if I ruined it for some who hasn`t seen it yet)
The Bisping VS Kang fight was nice though, Bisping is actually almost a well rounded fighter now and not just a fucking fistfighting british hudlum (not saying it`s something wrong with that!).
The Alexander Gustavsson fight...what a hero, first ufc fight in his career and KO!
There`s been alot of talk and debate in sweden about banning MMA and a high amount of dirtthrowing from people who are obviously not in their right mind and know NOTHING about the sport! I am not only a fan of the sport but I also have friends who are active both in figthing and things around it.
It pisses me of that idiots who don`t know what they are talking about can sit on national tv and talk about how there are "No rules" in mma and that it`s just "one guy beating up another guy senslessly" how it`s "human cockfighting" (I know it sounds funny but it`s not that type of cock, as in rooster, male chicken and not male genital fighting. I would totally support that sport though.).
To top it of they bring in an expert in brain damage to tell the viewers how extremely dangerous this sport is and how it damages the brain to get punched and kicked. Seriously, it hurts you? Well...NO SHIT SHERLOCK?
If someone watching the show doesn`t understand that if you punch someone in the head they get brain damage they probably already have heavy brain damage ( and are members of the swedish democrats party)!
This is how I see it (you knew it was coming right?;)).
I will answer the 3 most usual and stupid attacks on mma and number 4 is more something that I would like to tell the people who spend time, money and energy to stop this sport.
1. Yes it is a dangerous sport, that`s a fact even though MMA has less fatal and serious injuries than hockey, soccer and even horseback riding (YES it is true!). -Maybe we should ban those sports as well?
(and now the politically correct debate bitch goes:)
"But this is about the INTENTION to hurt somebody, that`s what makes it wrong!"
Really? Is it?
First of all I don`t really think it matters what the intention was if you are talking about how dangerous a sport is. If you are hurt you are hurt, it`s that simple.
It`s not like you are gonna be paralyzed from falling off a horse like Christopher Reeve, not being able to move a muscle in you body with a fucking straw in you mouth driving your wheel chair and go:
"Well this is okay, THANK GOD it wasn`t intentional because that would have been REALLY BAD for me. That would have totally ruined my life, but now it`s just GREAT!"
The only thing that matters is the actual injuries.
However the whole INTENTION part is actually a totally different discussion but we can have that one as well, I will humor you miss debate bitch.
(This is how happy Cristopher got when he found out that the horse that threw him of didn`t INTEND to do it. BIG difference, paralyzed with a smile!)
Let`s take a real world example then:
I played hockey when I was younger and let me tell you something about that sport: That is about intentionally hurting the opponent!
There`s no denying that. Look at an NHL game and tell me that it`s not. They even have players AIMING to hurt the best players of the opposite team, hitting them from behind and when they are not looking for the sole purpose of hurting them, giving them no chance to defend themselves from the guy who wheys 20kg more than you who is racing across the rink at very high speed to hurt you. Even at a junior level this is a problem in hockey!
Two words: Börje Salming
(Börje got this nice scar from playing ping-pong and not a safe sport like hockey. That`s the next dangerous sport we are gonna get banned and the shorts are too small!)
(Dudes, come on...We can see your whole asses! Look at that! BAN IT!)
MMA is about two grown (physically at least) men who whey the same weight, are matched up and have equal skills. They meet each other face to face with nothing but their bodys to use. They know whats coming, they trained for it and they can defend themselves.
Is that really less civilised?
Or to make it simple, another example of a sport: Boxing. Enough said and your argument sucks.
By the way, boxers get more than 50 times the brain damage. Why? Well they get punched in the head just about all the time and they fight 10 times as often as an MMA fighter (who fights about 3 times a years).
Wanna see what a "real" sport like boxing does to you?
Two words: Mike Tyson.
(No funny and humiliating text needed)
2. MMA has rules, very clear ones. It is however about the ultimate FIGHTER and not what the other martial arts has turned into: A display of techniques and rules that has turned the whole beautiful artform, it`s history as a way of fighting into something that is about as interesting and stimulating as watching 18 holes of golf! If you want to do something that is about "personal development", "discipline", "the history and culture of the country" and all those other bullshit excuses why people take martial arts like Karate, Kung Fu etc. when you actually really just wanna learn how to kick ass then this is my advice:
Take a fucking yoga class, buy a book and a take trip to Japan. That would do the trick instead.
3. MMA is a combination of other existing martial arts (that is why it`s called Mixed Martial Arts, duh!). Like boxing, wrestling, judo, karate etc. etc.
Do you see a pattern here? All those martial arts are not only allowed but also they are even in the olympics! They are "real" sports. With that in mind are you seriuosly saying that combining them is what makes it so horrible?
Like Karate is okay and a nice sport but when you get some wrestling moves and boxingpunches in there it`s soooo not okay anymore? The are all not just "ok" sports but very nice, olympic sports loved by people across the world but when they are combined they become "one guy beating up another guy senslessly"?
Get over yourself!
It was the same thing with karate and even Judo wich is now considered a very peaceful martial arts. It was the exact same discussion!
4. Last one. This might be the most important point in the whole argument and it`s very, very simple (drum roll): Mind your own fucking business.
It`s really that simple.
Even if how you see it somebody wants to get his "head bashed in for money", is that any of your business? Does that hurt you or anyone else but the guy getting punched? No it doesn`t, does it?
MMA is the worlds fastest growing sport and you are free to have your thoughts, ideas and opinions about it. It is always healthy to debate things but come on, think about it. You don`t have to watch it if you don`t like it, but alot of other people do like it.
Just like with desperate housewives, reality shows, golf or whatever else sucks that alot of other people like to watch.
Do what I do when golf comes on: Change the channel and pretend that the piece of shit "sport" doesn`t exist.
Works for me. =)
Tomorrow I am going to Mr. Needle and ink again but this time to Axel in Hässleholm. We`ll see what I end up with! =)
XOXO
